Americana from the Heart of Florida
I had the pleasure of meeting John Gilson back in 2004, and since then, I’ve always admired his passion, skill, and presence in our local music scene. Born in Philly but adopted by Florida in the late ’80s, John quickly became a staple in the community, not just as a musician, but as a true artist and collaborator. He’s been around our music scene ever since, leaving an indelible mark everywhere he plays.
His latest album, Yesterday-Tomorrow (released in 2022), is a wonderful reflection of his journey, his soul, and his unshakable connection to Americana and roots music. It’s a 12-track offering filled with texture, warmth, and honest storytelling.

John is a consummate guitar player—no doubt about it. His ability to perform guitar solos is absolutely fantastic, and that brilliance shines throughout the album. Whether it’s the gritty emotion in “Six Foot Down“, the melodic storytelling of “Day #627 A Cowpoke’s Apocalypse“, or the heartfelt groove in “She’s Gone, Gone, Gone“, there’s always a moment where John’s guitar becomes its own voice, speaking volumes.
What I love about this album is how real it feels. It’s not overly polished or trying to fit into a commercial mold. It sounds like John—authentic, grounded, and full of life. The production is tight but never sterile, giving space for each instrument and story to breathe.

Yesterday–Tomorrow isn’t just an album—it’s a chapter of John’s life and the lives of the friends and musicians who joined him in telling it. For those of us who know him, it’s a celebration of his enduring talent. And for new listeners, it’s an open invitation into the world of an artist who’s been quietly but powerfully shaping Florida’s music culture for decades.
Highly recommended if you love heartfelt songwriting, tasteful guitar work, and music made with soul. You will find a link to John’s Spotify at the end of this review.
Thank you for the music, Jhonny.
